Amateur

I love doing paint nights.

There’s something really freeing about being an amateur and just throwing yourself into a creative project that you’re not particularly good at and just having a good time with it.

I think that, for anxious people like me, the low level of intrinsic talent leads to low expectations leads to the ability to just love the thing you do.

Hence: Amateur.

When I started my TikTok, I dubbed it “aggressively embracing imperfections.” I had the same sort of attitude there: that I wasn’t going to be producing anything overly complicated or polished. I just wanted to put art out there into the world. And now I am.

I’ll never be a great artist or a famous singer. But the act of creation makes me really happy, and I’m glad I got back to that during the pandemic. My home is full of art and color. And I love that, for myself.
