Unsolicited divorce advice

Ever since my own divorce five years ago, I’ve turned into some kind of Divorce Doula for a number of friends. It’s difficult emotionally, but rewarding to be able to help them through the worst period of their lives.

The biggest thing I tell them?

“Keep Calm and Lawyer Up” image from Etsy

You need a lawyer.

That’s it. That’s the first piece of advice.

You need YOUR lawyer.

You have to have a lawyer that’s got attorney client privilege with you and will not share your questions with the other party in the divorce case.

Grey Rock

No matter what you think about Narcissism Discourse, your job now is to minimize contact and conflict with your ex partner. Don’t start fights. Don’t try to litigate disagreemens. That’s what the lawyer is for.

You might need three lawyers

If you do something like Mediation or Collaborative, you’ll still need your own lawyer to look over the outcome and make sure there’s nothing you’ve missed.

Your friends are not lawyers.

If your friend says something about the divorce or what your responsibilities are, nod and listen and ask your lawyer about it.

If your friend says “you’ll have to pay alimony forever” they’re full of shit. Ask your lawyer.

Even if your friend says something that seems plausible, they’re full of shit. Ask your lawyer.

Even if they are A lawyer, they’re not YOUR lawyer.

You need your own lawyer with a legal and ethical responsibility towards you.

Sometimes the cheapest way to pay for something is with money.

Having a lawyer is the best way to ensure that you’ve dotted all your i’s and have covered every eventuality. You don’t want an expensive surprise happening.

Keep calm.

Like the Etsy mug at the beginning says. This, too, shall pass. Like a motherfucking kidney stone. But you WILL get through it.

You don’t need an image generator, you need your own words

A few different things crystallized into this post.

The most relevant one, though, was when someone I know temporarily lost access to his usual AI image generator and he decided to just post his image prompt to the discord instead.

And you know what? The prompt he sent was beautifully written. It might not have technically been poetry, and I suspect he would object to seeing it referred to that way, but it evoked such a beautiful image in my mind that I think it counts.

You have this power. If you are getting good at writing prompts to make the machine paint a picture for you? Start writing those prompts down. Let your reader create the image your words inspire in their own mind.

You are already a poet. Just open the door and let the words flow out.

What would Dolly do?

Saw this on Facebook.

A triptych of Dolly Parton, Carrie FIsher, and Betty White, drawn as saints. Artist: https://www.lindsayvanek.com/

I worried at first that this was AI; but then I recognized the center of the triptych as being one I had seen before (and actually own a sticker of).

I like the idea of saints as relatable people – in a way, they are the celebrities of the Catholic church. (Someone make a “youth minister voice” joke about that.)

And I think it’s lovely to sanctify regular people: to say “This is someone whose life I believe is worth emulating.” Which, in the end, is the purpose of sainthood under Catholicism: to see another ordinary human’s life, and to say “Emulating this will bring me closer to the Divine.”

So be kind. Be generous. Be loving. Be that which you admire in others. If you have such trauma from your upbringing (or if you have no relation to the cultural context) that “what would Jesus do” is a hurtful or meaningless phrase, then you should instead ask yourself: “What would Dolly do?” Then go and do that.

Best first books?

My friend said: “I want a lending bookshelf of the first books of different series”

So I gave them

Sabriel

Gideon the Ninth

His Majesty’s Dragon

The Fifth Season

Mistborn

The Way of Kings

Shards of Honor (surprisingly NOT Sanderson)

Curse of Chalion

Stealing from Wizards, Book 1: Pickpocketing

Someplace To Be Flying

Akata Witch

Binti

Her Soul To Take

What are your suggestions?

I’ll do standalone books in a different post.

Kaizen but worse

I realized today that part of my personality is that I constantly feel like a fuckup, to the point that I just embrace it and make a point to learn how to do better next time.

It’s like kaizen but worse.

Now come, be a fuckup with me. Know better, do better, fuck it up in different ways next time.

Monopoly as an analogy

Today I saw this Instagram video about Monopoly as an analogy to redlining and white privilege in America, and it really stuck with me.

Standard note that intersectionality is a thing and race is just one of many axes of privilege/oppression! (Anyone reading this probably knows that already, but just in case.)

Books of 2026: Dungeon Crawler Carl

I’m currently on Book 3 and I would die for Princess Donut.

The audiobook narrator is incredible.

I expected the genre to be fantasy. It’s horror instead. Be warned.

Carl is nontoxic masculinity personified. He’s always protecting people even when it puts himself at risk.

I don’t understand why people don’t like Lit RPG as a genre. This is better than Greenwood. Hell, it’s better than Salvatore.

Books of 2026: Lud in the Mist

“Lud in the Mist” by Hope Mirrless. Really delightful story that inspired Stardust by (damnatio memoriae). I’m inspired to turn this into a roleplaying setting in the vein of PBTA or one of the Sanity mechanics games.

Everything I loved about it (the lush descriptions of the English countryside) are the things people hate about Tolkien.

But I did finally look up what “pleached” meant.

Books of 2026: Starter Villain

Earlier this year, I listened to “Starter Villain” by John Scalzi on audiobook. It was very good! Wil Wheaton is a great voice actor.

I’m enjoying my audiobooks on my commute.
