Preparedness!

If you know me in person, you know I (a) have anxiety and (b) like to be prepared for things, Just In Case.

Reminder about taxes

Because some folks I know got hit with this one recently, here’s a reminder that when you are Married and you file your W4, the “married” checkbox makes the form assume you are the sole earner for your family, and it calculates your withholdings accordingly.

Yes, this is idiotic.

No, I don’t know why the W4 is written that way.

Here is a Personal Finance Reddit post with more information. As always, the IRS is the final arbiter on this stuff; internet people can try to explain it but always go back to irs.gov to be sure.

Intersectionality video

This video by Taha was a good quick explanation of what Intersectionality means. He’s a person of color (Persian, I think? But don’t quote me on that) and also gay, and doesn’t always feel completely welcomed in either of those two communities.

A lot of people have weird misleading takes on what Intersectionality means. So I try to share information about it when I can.

I’m still planning my retirement

See, I’m happily planning for mine

I’m fairly certain the optimism/pessimism thing is about mental health, not cold hard facts? Because the future is SO uncertain in the exact degree of suckitude it’s gonna entail.

And even though I generally agree with Tolkien’s Long Defeat philosophy, that the world is getting steadily worse, I also agree with Tolkien’s point that the stuff we’ve got is pretty damn good.

And I know saying that doesn’t do shit against clinical depression, I’m not trying to cure anybody, you know? It’s just. That’s where I’m at.

I started drafting this post in October of 2023, apparently? Wow. Anyway, here it is.

I am still planning my retirement.

Unexpected joys

You know, there’s a lot of discourse right now about Facebook and how ugly everything is and the Dead Internet and all of that.

And I definitely feel the pull to leave all the social media tools and stick to nothing but this geocities upgrade I find myself on right now. But I still stay on Facebook, because I genuinely *like* keeping in touch with people from high school.

And then today, one of them sends me this in the mail.

The most beautiful flame-colored scarf.

This is why I don’t leave. The people in my life make me who I am. And I’ll be sending them Christmas cards long after Facebook is consigned to the dust-heap of history; but I’m grateful to the thing Facebook briefly was, that let us get back in touch with each other.

Moonstone Island

I have been playing a really great game recently called Moonstone Island, on the Steam deck. The way I describe it to my friends is:

Imagine that you’re playing Stardew Valley, but you’re also catching Pokemon, and those Pokemon battle each other using Slay the Spire decks.

It’s very very cute, and also has nice queer representation. All pluses in my book.
